Summer Solstice 2023: How to make the most of the longest day of the year at Angrove

What is the summer solstice?

The summer solstice is the longest day of the year. In the UK, this takes place on Wednesday 21st June. The sun will rise before 5am and it won’t set until after 9pm. With 17 hours of sunshine, there’s plenty of time for enjoying the best of the coast and country at Angrove Country Park!

Here are our recommendations on what to do in and around Angrove on 21st June.

Early morning – Hike up to Roseberry Topping

Catch the best views of the sunrise at Roseberry Topping. Standing at 320m high, it’s one of North Yorkshire’s most recognised hills and makes for a great place to enjoy a cup of tea and kickstart your day. And don’t forget your flask!

Late morning – Take a ride on the Saltburn Cliff Tramway

After a hike, why not let the marvels of Victorian engineering take charge of your next ascent In nearby Saltburn-by-the-Sea is the iconic Saltburn Cliff Tramway. The funicular railway is the oldest operating water-balance cliff lift in the UK. If you haven’t seen or experienced it before, you must take a trip!

Lunchtime – Fish & chips on Whitby beach

Just a short drive away is the world-renowned seaside town of Whitby: home to some of the UK’s best fish and chips. On a summer day, there’s really nothing better than fish and chips with just the right amount of salt and vinegar. Add mushy peas, curry sauce or maybe a generous helping of gravy and you’ve got the perfect dish.

Try Trenchers, Magpie Café or Quayside for the true taste of Whitby. And for an authentic coastal experience, make sure to enjoy your chippy on the beach. Just watch out for seagulls!

Afternoon – Explore the North Yorkshire Moors

The North Yorkshire Moors is right on Angrove’s doorstep. Covering 1,146 acres, this breathtaking national park is full of wild woodland, magical moorland, towering cliff lines, sandy beaches and beautiful bays.

Included in its most famous stop-offs are the iconic North York Moors Railway, Mallyan Spout waterfall in Heartbeat country, Dalby Forest and the area’s coastal retreats like Runswick Bay and Staithes.

While you’re there, keep your eyes peeled for Yorkshire’s native wildlife – hares, birds of prey and more.

Evening – Back to base

After a busy day exploring, why not retire to the many comforts of Angrove? Enjoy an ice-cold gin and tonic – or something softer – in The G&Tea House. And finish the day by watching the sunset, relaxing in one of our lodges’ hot tubs.

But if you would rather stay with us all day, we’ve got you covered!

At Angrove, we’ve got a host of on-site activities for you to enjoy on the longest day of the year – and the other 364 days!

  • Try your hand at crazy golf on our brand new Adventure Golf course in the shadow of Roseberry Topping and right beside the G&T House.
  • Head on inside to enjoy a range of our freshly prepared meals and a plethora of gins.
  • Enjoy a BBQ for lunch or dinner, sat outside in our lodges’ outdoor kitchens which come complete with ‘Big Green Egg BBQ’.
