David Monks
Guest Story: Aysgarth
For many, a holiday park is just a place to stay. For Mr Monks, Aysgarth Leisure Resorts has become something much more: a home from home, a place for family memories and a retreat he has returned to over 40 times.
Living in Pontefract, he has found that the drive up to Aysgarth, just an hour along the A1, is worth every mile. Over the years, as soon as him and his mum leave, the first thing they talk about is when they will return.
What keeps him coming back
“The views are wonderful in summer, looking over the fields with the sheep. The park is immaculate. The manager and the guys keep it just fantastic. The lawns are beautiful all year round. I’ve looked on Hoseasons for alternative parks to have a bit of a change, and there is just nowhere that beats Aysgarth.”
Nearby villages and towns add the experience. A usual day at Aysgarth includes afternoons spent wandering through Hawes, Keld, Kirby Stephen, Reeth or Leyburn which are all within easy reach.
Favourite lodges and special memories
Over the years, certain lodges have become his go to retreats. Lodge numbers 72, 42, 69, 29, 30, 31 and 11 stand out for their comfort and lovely views.
“The lodges are always spotless and so comfortable. I could not wish for anything nicer. Wherever you stay, you’ve got something to look at. The park being on tiers makes the views lovely everywhere.”
One stay that stands out is his 60th birthday, spent in a four-bedroom lodge surrounded by family. Smiles, laughter, shared meals and a celebration in the heart of the Dales. Moments like these remind him and us that Aysgarth is not just a holiday, it is where memories are made.
It’s the people that make the difference
More than anything, what really sets Aysgarth apart for Mr Monks is the people.
“But the staff for me make it. I love to go for a walk. There’s always somebody I can talk to, whether it’s housekeeping, maintenance, reception or the grounds people. They all have time to spend to chat, and it’s nice because when it’s just me and my mum, it’s nice for me to get out for a bit of a wander and a chat.”
Names like Damien, Nicola, Luke and Dawn are not just staff, they are friendly faces who recognise returning guests, share a conversation or brighten a walk across the park. That sense of community is what makes Aysgarth feel like a second home.
In his own words – Aysgarth summed up
“As soon as we are home, we are planning our return.”
“It is peaceful. It is special. It is home.”
Whether it’s long walks on the park, drives through the Yorkshire Dales or simply watching the sheep graze at sunset, Aysgarth has a way of slowing life down, bringing people together and creating memories that last a lifetime.
