Wildlife at Ullswater

Ullswater Heights is home to one of the largest populations of great crested newt in Cumbria, we have constructed a ‘newt hotel’ and four ponds for this protected species and other amphibians to live safely.

Badgers frequently pay us a visit, snuffling for earthworms in the surrounding fields.

We are also lucky enough to have a resident barn owl and a peregrine falcon, so keep an eye out for these beautiful birds swooping overhead during your stay.

Penrith Castle

Built at the end of the 14th century, the imposing ruins of Penrith Castle stand as a lasting monument to medieval times and the battles between the English and the Scots. The castle was later transformed into a luxurious residence by Richard Duke of Gloucester, who later became King Richard III, who resided at the castle between 1471 and 1485.
