What is Aysgarth Falls?

Aysgarth Falls is a triple flight of waterfalls that have been attracting tourists from far and wide for over 200 years! Its falls have three stages the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls.

Aysgarth Falls is a stunning display of the area’s natural beauty, such as its array of snowbells in January, primroses in April and its bluebells in May, this is a location that you can’t afford to miss.

It offers multiple trails for family, friends and avid dog walkers to enjoy the fabulous scenery. It’s a specifically specular site after heavy rainfall, which as I’m sure you can imagine happens fairly often in The Yorkshire Dales!

What is there to do near Aysgarth Falls?

If you’re spending the day exploring the local area, then here are a couple of places to make sure you visit.

You can start with a visit to the Wensleydale Creamery. The Wensleydale Creamery is one of the best places to find beautiful delicious cheese in all of Wensleydale, in fact all of the Yorkshire Dales. It’s even favoured by Wallace and Gromit!

You could head over to the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham. Take a tour around this fabulous brewery and enjoy learning its rich history whilst sampling a range of their delicious beers. Then stop for a bite of lunch in their award-winning kitchen which offers a wide range of locally sourced produce

Quite possibly the best view in all of North Yorkshire is that from the top of Pen Hill, which is the spectacular hill you can see from the park at Aysgarth Lodge Holidays

Take in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales national park from the top of this local Wensleydale landmark. There is a car park mid-way up the hill, which is free. From here there is a 30-minute steep climb to the top, however it is well worth the climb as the view of North Yorkshire from the top is one that simply cannot be beaten! For those wanting to get a few more miles under their belt, you can walk from the small village of West Witton. This 7.5-mile walk is a popular route for many of the local walkers.

The national park centre is the hub for all the information you’ll need, it also has a car park where, for a small fee, you can park right at the start of the trail.

How long does it take to walk Aysgarth Falls?

Starting from the national park centre, the Aysgarth Falls walk takes just under a mile to complete when starting from the car park, however for those who are looking for more of a challenge there are longer routes which also offer great views of the waterfalls.

How do I get to Aysgarth Falls?

Aysgarth falls is situated in the picturesque village of Aysgarth, between Leyburn and Hawes.

To get to the Falls from Aysgarth Lodge Holidays simply turn right from the main entrance and walk along the road up the hill. Then turn left at the top of the hill and keep following the road along the grass until you see the Aysgarth Falls Hotel on your right.

To the right of the hotel, there is a road which heads down to the national park centre and car park from here, follow it down and it will take you over a small bridge, where you’ll see the Mill Race tea shop which is an excellent place to stop for tea and cake!

Head over the bridge and keep to the left and then on the left you’ll find the visitors centre and car park. From here you’ll find all the information about the different trails and you can follow the trail to lower and middle falls.

There is also another car park just as you go past the Aysgarth Falls hotel, which also has a lovely café should you fancy a cup of tea.

Where is the waterfall in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves?

One of the best trivia facts about Aysgarth Falls is that it was the setting for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner. All three of the falls at Aysgarth feature in the film. More specifically the River Ure plays a starring role in the fight scene between Robin and Little John.

So why not head down to the Falls and see if you can recreate this well know movie moment for the photo album?

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves isn’t the waterfall’s only claim to fame as it was also featured on the television programme ‘Seven Natural Wonders’ as one of the wonders of the North.

How far is Aysgarth Falls from Leyburn?

Aysgarth Falls is just seven miles from Leyburn which is a 25-minute drive or if you’re feeling more adventurous you can walk from Leyburn along the shore one of North Yorkshires historical locations along to Bolton Castle.

Bolton Castle sits just four miles north east of Aysgarth Lodge Holidays and is a key historical location in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It’s history dates back to 14th century and at one-point Mary Queen of Scots was actually imprisoned in the castle.

Which River Falls in Aysgarth?

The River Ure is the source of the Aysgarth Falls, over an almost one-mile stretch on its descent to mid-Wensleydale.

The River Ure is approximately 74 miles long and its source is the River Ouse. It is the principal river in Wensleydale and is also the only river in the Yorkshire Dales not to have its Dale named after it. Wensleydale is named after the village and not the River Ure.
