David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature 2024
Here at Leisure Resorts, we care about the happiness of everyone who visits our parks, including our holidaymakers, owners and all the amazing wildlife!
Being located in some of the most stunning countryside destinations in the North of England, we’re keen to embrace nature and do our bit for the planet.
Our parks have been awarded a variety of David Bellamy awards over the years, and in 2024 Angrove, Aysgarth and Ullswater Heights have all pledged to commit themselves to:
π¦ Improving their existing habitats for wildlife
π Creating new wildlife habitats and features where possible
π Managing their green space in as environmentally friendly a way as possible
πββοΈ Involving their guests and staff in wildlife conservation
π Engaging with local conservation bodies and projects.
As part of the David Bellamy award, our parks have the opportunity to get involved with a variety of different projects that help nature thrive.
Ullswater Heights
The team at Ullswater Heights have set up a bird feeding station, providing our local birds with an array of nutritious snacks including Fat Balls, Seed Mix, Sunflower Hearts, Peanuts and Super Food Energy Cakes.
They have also created a home for ladybirds and installed two bug houses.
As of September 2024, Ullswater Heights has achieved the Home Sweet Home wildlife challenge!
“Ullswater Heights is in a stunning location in an old quarry β with residual ponds, quarry cliffs and flower-rich grasslands surrounding the more formal areas by the lodges. The reported wildlife from the site is phenomenal (peregrines, osprey, barn owl and great crested newt to name a few). Wild habitats and wildlife are integral to the daily management of the site β and staff are both knowledgeable and engaged with this, which is fantastic to see. There are some great things in place to encourage visitors to take notice of their surroundings too. The Park has managed to combine a successful business with good quality wildlife habitat β with both benefiting from the other, ensuring plenty of wildlife for the guests to see and enjoy.”
Tamsin Douglas, David Bellamy Advisor.
Angrove Country Park
The team over at Angrove Country Park are also working to create more housing for wildlife, they are adding bird and owl boxes, hedgehog houses and ensuring that designated areas such as hedgerows and woodland are preserved.
They are also working towards the pollinator patch, with a wildflower garden already planted.
Aysgarth Lodges
The team at Aysgarth Lodges have many on-going projects which they’re continuing to work towards. They have lots of bird boxes and a bug hotel, for the pollinators they have lots of wild flowers around the park and are looking at creating a βyear roundβ flower bed that has plants growing/blooming at different times throughout the year.
For their rewilding project, they are working on a ‘wild field’ which will have a path around the edge so people can enjoy walking around spotting the wildlife.
We are keen to work towards the ‘Everyone Active’ award, as this gets everyone involved in wildlife conservation and will help holidaymakers and owners have a richer and more interesting stay. We hope to implement exciting environmental activities to help inspire the future generation, the first step towards this in the Nature Scavenger Hunt cards which will shortly be being rolled out across our parks.
